The Medical Art Society, MAS
Founded in 1935, is a forum for doctors, dentists, or veterinary surgeons who enjoy making visual art. Students of these professions are also welcome.
If you are a painter, illustrator, printmaker, sculptor or potter, or have an interest in the visual arts, why not consider joining?
The society is now administered by Hampstead School of Art who manages membership, general inquiries, and email news to members. The agenda is set by a committee of volunteers, including a President, Honorary Treasurer, and Newsletter Editor. Members are invited to organize events such as sketching days, cultural city breaks, and overseas holidays. They are welcome to enter their own news, such as personal exhibitions, in the spring and autumn newsletters, or on the website. The aim of the society is not to provide instruction in techniques - although tuition, for example during clay modeling sessions, is sometimes given. Photography, although certainly a visual art form, is not included.
The main event of the Medical Art Society Year is the group exhibition in July at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. Prizes are awarded for both two- and three-dimensional art at the private view, which is followed by a dinner. A longstanding tradition has also been a winter series of life drawing sessions, currently held at the London Sketch Club in Chelsea. There is a rapport with the Dutch society Pincet en Penceel (Forceps and Pencil) such that members are invited to take part in each other’s activities.
