Congratulations to the winner of the Duncan Grant Prize Draw

Duncan Grant, Life with Bust 1906

Hampstead School of Art is delighted to announce that J. Palmer of NW3 is the winner of the Prize Draw, and will be presented with the painting Life with Bust (1906) by Isabel H. Langtry.

The draw generated much interest in the painting which was donated by British musician, record producer and Tears for Fears vocalist Roland Orzabal and wife Caroline. The moody, beautiful, still life is a very early painting, clearly signed and dated 1906.

The oil painting on board was probably painted when Duncan Grant was still a student at the Slade School of Art, London University. It evokes his interest at that time in classical Greek portraits, the technique of chiaroscuro and the simple ways of life - a plain bowl, a bottle of wine – and also the importance of literature and knowledge. A member of the historic Bloomsbury Group and co-director with Vanessa Bell of the Omega Workshops, he lived with Vanessa at Charleston for most of their lives. He was an extraordinary character and wonderful artist.

We would like to thank Roland and Caroline Orzabal for their generous donation of the painting, and to all those who took part in the draw.

The total raised from the Prize Draw is £2,700.
