HSoA Patron Francisco Gazitúa's new public sculpture “Circunnavegación” has been opened by the president of Chile Sebastian Pinera. The commission was the result of an international public art competition, which invited six artists to propose an intervention to commemorate five centuries of the Strait of Magellan.
Inspired by an armillary sphere, an astronomical instrument used until the end of the Middle Ages, the sculpture is a metaphor of the globe that contains inside a representation of the Nao Victoria -a boat commanded by Hernando de Magallanes- sailing westward and with its main mast at the axis of the earth position, inclined at 23 degrees.
The monumental work is 17 meters high and 12 meters in diameter and weighs over 25 tons.
