I am delighted to be exhibiting the paintings of Martin Evans. These beautiful works reflect the colours and simplicity of the landscape and wildness of the Northern California coast. Many of the paintings started as plein-air pieces and were then completed in the studio. Thank you, Martin, for sharing these paintings with us." Isabel H Langtry, Principal HSoA

Martin Evans is an architect who runs a small practice in Shoreditch and is a regular student at Hampstead School of Art. "In 2016, I immersed myself fully in painting in Northern California, a monthlong Residency at the The Chalk Hill Art Residency in Sonoma Valley, part of the Warnecke Ranch and Vineyard which is owned by the John Warnecke family. John Carl Warnecke was an architect and artist who ran the largest commercial architectural firm in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. The firm was involved on many government buildings throughout the United States including the John F Kennedy memorial. The ranch is a working vineyard and the base for the art school and family mental health charity as well as home for the John Carl Warnecke architectural archive. Art residencies run throughout the year and students stay in the old farm house and have the use of the art barn as their studio. The Residency allowed me to explore the local landscape of the Sonoma Valley and the Northern California coast. After a long hot dry summer, Autumn brought deep colours of golden grass hills and burnt reds to the landscape. The rolling mists of the Pacific Ocean brought soft pinks and deep greys to the Jenner Coast and the almost prehistoric coastal landscape is a fascinating subject to paint." Martin Evans
